Emotional Freedom Technique

What is Emotional Freedom Technique?

Would you be interested in a simple tool that can help you be more successful in anything you do?

Emotional Freedom Technique

When a child has a learning disability like dyslexia, making some things more difficult to learn, he quickly develops a belief that he's not smart. He then approaches learning situations with anxiety, which makes learning even more difficult. EFT Therapy can quickly remove the negative beliefs and emotions, making learning easier - even for a learning disabled student.

How about a learning strategy that would unblock anything in the way of your brilliance (or your child's or student's brilliance)?

Would you like to know how to reduce the anxiety and limiting beliefs that are stopping you from expressing yourself or achieving your goals in any part of your life?

EFT is an amazing natural anxiety remedy.

Would you like to know how you reduce pain and improve your overall health and well-being?

How about eliminating allergies and sensitivities to foods and things in our environment?

This is just a glimpse of the power of Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).

What is EFT?

Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT is a simple, quick, easy-to-learn and highly effective self-healing technique that can clear the way for much easier learning.

In her excellent ebook, "You Can Heal with EFT," Jo Hainsworth tells a story that helps to explain how EFT works. She uses the analogy of warning lights on a car.

Jo says if a warning light is on in your car and you take it to our mechanic, you wouldn't want the mechanic to simply disengage the warning light.

Instead, you would want him to search under the hood and diagnose and repair the source of the problem that is causing the warning light to go on.

In the same way, when you have pain in your body, or feel anxious, angry, resentful or another uncomfortable emotion, it does not serve you to simply take a pill to make the symptom go away, without knowing the underlying cause.

That's like disabling the warning light in your car.

You've stopped the annoying signal, your body's warning light, but you haven't found the underlying cause of the problem.

With Emotional Freedom Technique, you are able to get under your body's "hood" and resolve the underlying cause of the warning light, your painful symptoms or limiting emotions.

Amazingly, EFT works relatively quickly to reduce or totally remove stress, anxiety, anger or other emotional pain. Emotional Freedom Technique transforms limiting and negative emotions and beliefs into calm and confidence.

EFT has been effectively used in many learning settings to remove the stress and anxiety that blocks the ability to learn and perform in an academic setting. She how it worked with Liz.

Acknowledging Feelings is Healing

In my experience there is something transformational about looking deeply at an issue and telling the truth about your thoughts and beliefs about it.

Noticing and naming the associated emotions, recognizing how those emotions feel in the body and identifying any related thoughts or beliefs is affirming to the body and mind.

There is something deeply healing about truly seeing and acknowledging the truth of how you are thinking and feeling about an issue.

After using the Emotional Freedom Technique on an issue, the related emotional charge is usually released, along with the limiting beliefs and judgments.

In the place of all that was distressing before, I then feel peace, understanding, insight, confidence in myself and the unfolding of life. This is the same transformation I commonly witness in my clients.

Emotional Freedom Technique - Emotional Acupuncture

Emotional Freedom Technique is sometimes called emotional acupuncture without the needles.

Acupuncture Meridians - But Without the Needles

We have energy channels in our bodies that are commonly called acupressure meridians or acupuncture meridians.

Acupuncture clears the blockages in these energy meridians by inserting needles in the location of the meridian. In acupuncture, needles are used to stimulate the flow of energy in the acupuncture meridians.

In EFT, you use your fingertips to tap on the end points of the same acupuncture meridians, stimulating the flow of energy in the meridian system.

Benefits of EFT

  • Easy to learn
  • Most people, children included, can do the process on their own
  • Free or inexpensive to learn
  • Non-toxic
  • Non-invasive
  • Does in minutes what traditional talk therapy may achieve in years, if ever
  • Relatively pain-free
  • Simple
  • Can be done in a group while preserving the privacy of individuals
  • Can be done "covertly" in crowds by visualizing tapping on the meridians
  • Works equally well with children and adults
  • The results are usually permanent
  • Works on a huge list of issues - see the list below.

How the Emotional Freedom Technique Was Developed

EFT was first introduced in 1995 by Gary Craig. Craig is an engineering graduate of Stanford with a lifetime interest in personal improvement via psychology. He is an ordained minister and Certified Master Practitioner of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP).

Craig first learned the precursor to EFT, TFT (Thought Field Therapy) from Roger Callahan. Taken from the free EFT manual, here's how Craig describes Callahan's experience that led Callahan to develop Thought Field Therapy:

In 1980 Dr. Robert Callahan was working with a patient, Mary, for an intense water phobia. She suffered from frequent headaches and terrifying nightmares, both of which were related to her fear of water. To seek help, she had been going from therapist to therapist for years... with no material improvement. Dr. Callahan tried to help her by conventional means for a year and a half. He didn't make much headway either.

Then one day he stepped outside the normal "boundaries" of psychotherapy. Out of curiosity, he had been studying the body's energy system and decided to tap with his fingertips under her eyes (an end point of the stomach meridian). This was prompted by her complaint of some stomach discomfort. To his astonishment, she announced immediately that her phobia was gone and she raced [out to Callahan's] swimming pool and began throwing water in her face.

No fear. No headaches. It all went away... including the nightmares. And it has never returned. She is totally free of her water phobia.

Where's the Research?

Most of us don't feel comfortable using methods that have not been thoroughly tested and proven by scientific methods. Most of us wait to embrace something new until the mainstream media and the majority of people have heard of it and feel comfortable with it.

The statistics say that only around 14% of the population is willing to embrace new methods.

EFT is still new and has not had the thorough scientific testing that would give it broad acceptance. To read thousands of success stories, go to Gary Craig's website. In addition, check out this link for a list of links to studies on EFT and energy psychology.

What Can EFT Be Used For?

As the name implies, Emotional Freedom Techniques can be used on any issue or area of your life where you don't feel you have emotional freedom.

That means that if there is any place in your life where you feel restricted in any way, unable to be your free, creative, joyous, energetic self, that is a candidate for EFT.

Much amazing EFT work has been done with war veterans who have spent decades in traditional therapy and are still suffering from nightmares and lives restricted by the debilitating emotions and beliefs caused by the ongoing trauma of their horrific memories.

There are many success stories of war veterans finding relief with EFT.

There are also countless examples of EFT successes with physical issues. The emotional root of physical issues is being gradually more and more accepted by even mainstream medicine.

Here is a short list of some of the many emotional and physical issues EFT has been successful with:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Fears and phobias
  • Trauma
  • Addictions and cravings
  • Emotional, physical or sexual abuse
  • Self esteem issues
  • Learning problems
  • Test taking anxiety
  • Relationship issues
  • Financial or abundance blocks
  • Weight issues
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Allergies and sensitivities
  • Insomnia and sleep issues
  • Resentment, blame, guilt, shame
  • Physical Pain
