Common Dyslexia Symptoms

There are dyslexia symptoms that are common among dyslexic children and adults. In this article, you'll find the common signs of dyslexia for anyone with that learning disability.

Dyslexia Symptoms

No two individuals with dyslexia are alike. The common characteristics vary greatly from person to person.

Since these dyslexia characteristics change as a person ages, there are specific characteristics that are typical for dyslexia in children and dyslexia in adults.

Keep in mind though, that there is great individual variation in the degree the symptoms manifest. The signs of dyslexia change over a person's lifetime.

The factors below differ in intensity from one dyslexic individual to another.

These Dyslexia Aspects Vary Greatly

  • Severity of the problem
  • Duration of the problem
  • How easily the person responds to instruction, treatment or remediation
  • How much difficulty the person has with other aspects of learning, such as reading, spelling, writing, math and language
  • Other conditions, such as difficulties with anxiety, attention, word retrieval, language processing
  • Strengths, talents or interests that allow the person to excel in other areas. These can include athletic, artistic, creative or intellectual gifts
  • Motivation to learn - for example, an intense desire to learn to read can make a surprising difference

Even with all of the above variables, there remain some general characteristics of dyslexia. They can be divided into the categories of reading, oral language, writing and math.

General Dyslexia Symptoms and Characteristics

Reading Difficulties:

  • Learning the sounds letters make
  • Dividing words into separate sounds
  • Reading accurately
  • Reading with natural phrasing, expression and speed
  • Comprehension
Dyslexia Symptoms In addition to the above general characteristics, there are dyslexia symptoms that are specific to people at different ages and academic levels.

The signs of dyslexia in children differ from the symptoms of dyslexia in adults.

Oral Language Difficulties:

  • Delayed speech
  • Understanding and interpreting language
  • Correct pronunciation of words
  • Awareness of word sounds and rhymes
  • Organizing thoughts

Writing Difficulties:

  • Organizing ideas
  • Spelling
  • Forming letters, handwriting
  • Spatial organization

Math Difficulties:

  • Memorizing math facts
  • Sequencing steps when solving problems

There Is Hope!

Even though dyslexia can present difficult challenges to learning, this learning disability is not insurmountable. In every field, there are successful people with dyslexia. There are successful dyslexic adults who are writers, lawyers, doctors, teachers, CEOs, actors, artists - and every other profession.

With growing technology, it becomes easier for dyslexic individuals to succeed in their chosen area. Here are just two of many examples:

  • Voice recognition software types as a person dictates, bypassing spelling and writing difficulties
  • Scanning pens read text aloud, reading full lines of text or providing pronunciation, syllabication, definitions and synonyms for individual words.

Being well-informed and knowledgeable about dyslexia symptoms is an important step in making good choices in education, remediation, tutors and products.

Mind Body Coaching

Children and adults with learning challenges also respond well to mind body coaching and methods like Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Brain Gym exercises.

Often the troubling emotions and beliefs about dyslexia are more of an obstacle to learning than the actual learning disability. See two examples of these methods helping Liz and Mike.
